In the post-Fischer era, Walter Browne established himself as the number one American chess player. Although he never really competed in the Candidates' Cycle, he was nonetheless one of the most exciting and daring players of the 1970s and 1980s. The reigning champion, the undefeated Anatoly Karpov, considered Browne one of his most challenging opponents! Browne was one of those players who thrived in short tournaments. Therefore, he excelled in various super tournaments such as Wijk aan Zee, Lone Pine, and Amsterdam. The prime Browne also attended the Reykjavik tournament in 1978. After the Spassky-Fischer match, Iceland experienced a real chess boom. By the end of the decade, Reykjavik already had its own prestigious and strong tournament. It's no surprise that it attracted the strongest chess players from around the world, even from the USSR. Miles, Larsen, Hort, Polugaevsky, and Kuzmin—a strong lineup for any tournament of that era. But Browne certainly didn't get lost among these stars. #chess #chesshistory
