A visit to The Retreat Animal Rescue, High Halden, Kent | Vegan food at the Be Kind Cafe #vegan #plantbased #veganfood #animalrights We are very lucky to live just a short journey from The Retreat Animal Rescue, nestled in High Halden, just a stone's throw from Ashford in Kent. The Retreat is a rescue centre for tormented, abused, sick, injured, and unwanted animals who have been saved from certain death. More than 1,000 animals are cared for at any one time. Some of the residents include former racehorses, injured live-export sheep, cows saved from slaughter, ex-petting farm goats, injured birds, Christmas turkeys, and worn-out battery hens. They operate as a non-profit organization, meaning that the profits made contribute to the welfare of the cherished animals living here. From spring to late autumn, they open their doors to visitors from Thursday to Sunday, allowing you to visit the wonderful animals, enjoy a bite to eat at the Be Kind Café, and shop in the thrift shop, craft shop, and Jenning’s Pantry—a vegan shop that appears to offer a vegan alternative for almost everything. The Be Kind Café boasts an impressive array of sandwiches, salads, burgers, and more. It also features a specials board with some intriguing dishes. Everything is freshly prepared and, of course, entirely vegan. Their motto says it all: "We don't save them to serve them." They also serve an assortment of sweet treats and cakes. During our visit, we opted to try the Retreat’s special breakfast, which included sausage, tofu scramble, vegan bacon, black pudding, mushrooms, hash browns, and toast. The breakfast was delicious and very, very filling. We also had the vegan burger and chips, which were very tasty and generously portioned. Despite being stuffed, we had already committed ourselves to something sweet. Our daughter enjoyed a heavenly Victoria sponge cake with vegan cream, and we had a vegan hazelnut cookie. With our bellies full, it was time to visit and make friends with some of the true stars—the beloved and contented animals that call this place home. The animals are a testament to the excellent care and love they receive, a world apart from the distressing scenes seen in factory farm footage. They maintain a genuine no-kill policy and care for animals with disabilities, nursing them through any period of illness. We sincerely hope this video inspires you to visit The Retreat and show your support for these incredible animals. It’s an exceptional organisation, and we’ll undoubtedly return throughout the year. Until next time, happy vegan dining!
