From a young age, he showed brilliant musical abilities. He first studied with his mother and later became the personal student of Alfred Cortot, whom he considered his spiritual father. At the age of 15, he obtained a concert license from the Ecole Normale de Musique, studying under Madame Bascourret de Guéraldi, and received the highest marks unanimously. He then went on to work with Edwin Fischer, who selected him to participate in several concerts. Encouraged by the great masters who trained him, he has already given numerous recitals in France, England, Germany, the Netherlands, and more, and has performed with top orchestras including the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, the Lamoureux Orchestra, the National Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (under the direction of André Cluytens, among others). Critics and the public agree that he is one of the finest current pianists, known for his poetic, lively, and sensitive playing. In 1974, Thierry de Brunboff retired as a monk to the En-Calcat abbey in the Tarn department and became Brother Thierry Jean.
