8mm Footage of the aftermath of the Detroit 12th Street Riots of July 23-28, 1967. Also known as the Detroit Rebellion, the disturbance was prompted by a police raid of an after-hours blind pig, heavily damaged the area around 12th Street and Clairmount. Local resident Amir Dickow's recently discovered 8mm footage captures armed National Guard members patrolling 12th street and the damaged buildings left in the wake of the riot. The 1967 riots marked a turning point for Detroit, which declined and lost hundreds of thousands in population over the decades following. Only in the last 15 years has the city made a significant comeback and healed from the wounds of 1967, institutionalized racism, segregation, and inequality.
