Can Cannabis Cure Cancer?

I’m Dr. Dan Stein, board-certified neurologist and medical cannabis expert. We do have some studies in cancer patients using cannabis therapy and we have some interesting results. There’s a physician named Guzman, Dr. Manuel Guzman who in Spain has been doing studies with brain tumors in concert with conventional therapy adding cannabis therapy and seeing some interesting results. We hope to have those study results to share with everyone during the next year. Other studies around the world helping patients with cancer are directed primarily at symptomatic therapy and we need more studies that are addressing the underlying disorder. So just so you know, in patients with cancer, we do fairly well treating symptoms like nausea, vomiting, anorexia, loss of appetite, loss of weight, pain, anxiety and sleep. We do real well with that using cannabis therapy. But when it comes to treating the underlying condition, we’re not really sure. We do have some information from patients that have been using cannabis therapy on their own, not so much in the research setting, that indicate hope is out there. Cancers have been controlled with cannabis therapy. There are many YouTube videos you can find out there with testimonials about patients with cancer that have had positive results on their underlying condition using cannabis therapy and it’s very exciting. But here in our clinic, I’m sober about that and when patients ask me, “Can cannabis cure cancer?” I indicate that we don’t really know yet, but we try. We try to use the dosing guidelines that have been provided by these patients, these brave individuals that are trying to control their cancer with cannabis. We increase the doses tolerated and try to reduce tumor burden. There are other aspects of tumor control that cannabis seems to help. There may be some reduction in metastasis or spread of cancer. There’s reduction in the blood vessel supply to the tumor. NGO genesis is reduced for the medical parlance and of course we can help with the symptoms as I said. So for now, the jury is still out. Cannabis may not cure cancer but we can do really well controlling symptoms and we’re hopeful that someday studies like what Dr. Guzman is doing out in Spain will show us that cannabis can reduce tumor burden.
