Full review and standardized testing of the HO scale Atlas Gold Series GE Dash 8-40C with DCC and QSI sound. Locomotive weight: 483 grams / 17.03 oz Drawbar Pull: 95 grams / 3.351 oz Drawbar Push: 100 grams / 3.527 oz This model was announced back in late 2011 and delivered in September of 2014 in the following paint schemes and road numbers, all available in DCC ready or with DCC and QSI sound. Lot's of road specific detail and very accurate to the prototype. Sunshades and mirrors come in the box and are installed by the modeller. Speed recorder and brake chain. The exhaust stack is a silver molded piece which is kind of lame but really over all it's nicely tooled 8.5/10 Operation/Drive train - Very very slow crawl speed. Much better than everything else out there. However, it's so slow that even at speed step 50 its barely moving and forget if you are on a grade, there is so much BEMF it may stall the train. They definitely tried too hard with this kind of stuff. A real challenge to speed match these because of the QSI decoder. 6/10 Weight - Weighing in at 483 grams / 17.03 oz, this locomotive is on the light end but compared to other manufacturers it's only 20 grams less than an Intermountain GEVO and pulls better. Decent weight and strong pulling power more than makes up for it.. 9/10 Sound - Very loud stock sound settings on it. No noticeable rattling from the speaker or any other similar issues. There is the ability to turn it down which is needed. I should note here that there are more sounds than are shown in the video, I showed only the sounds that work when the locomotive is stopped and idling. There are a few more like the DB and others that work when the locomotive is moving. Some of the crew sounds I find a bit toy and unnecessary. Nevertheless, they are in there if you want to pretend you are stopping at the water pipe for a top up. The chugging and coasting sounds are fantastic! 8.5/10 Lighting - Bright headlight and rear double light both front and back. They automatically brighten when you begin moving in that direction and go back to dim when you stop. Unfortunately, no ditch lights which is a major bummer coming from Atlas Gold. 6/10 OVERALL SCORE: 7.6 / 10 Atlas delivers a nice model but the QSI control is frustrating. They run great paired up with another identical Atlas model from the same run but forget trying to consist them with an Athearn or a Kato. The slow speed is very impressive but it just doesn't get any faster until you get to about speed step 60 and then it really takes off. With the grades on my layout they are crawling due to the BEMF when going up the grade then they take off when they crest the summit and take off like the Shinkasen Bullet Train on the way down. Like I said in the video, if Gregg from Fishplate Films couldn't get them to behave, I doubt I will have any luck. Very disappointing as the Atlas Gold tooling, chassis and drive train is great, it's the QSI that brings it down. Also, I'll say it again, no ditch lights - c'mon man! Happy New Year!
