Murphy's Haystacks Eyre Peninsula -South Australia

BAck in the old coaching days , a travelling going along the nearby road was impressed by the size of the local farmers haystacks, he thought he must be a very good farmer to have haystacks of this size but he was mistaking these rocks for haystacks. As the farmer in Question was called Murphy they became know to future passing travellers as Murphy's Haystacks. Today they continue this name even thought the farmer now is known as Dennis Cash, whose mother was one of the last Murphy's. I had the opportunity to chat with Dennis, who as a kid was sent for a couple of days to help out his uncle Pat Murphy, but he never left the farm, taking it on when uncle Pat died. Dennis feels opening up the rocks to the public is the most rewarding thing he has ever done. Entry to the rocks is by a gold coin donation and dennis is quite happy for you to stay in the carpark, so long as you don't have fires and keep the place tidy. He wouldnlt mind if you put something like $10 in the honesty box. Fpr that he keeps the place spotless, c;leans the flushing loos everyday, maintains the paths and restocks his sons honey jars that are for sale in the other honesty box. I feel the best time to visit the Haystacks is at Sunrise, (or sunset) or even by the light of the full moon when they take ona totally different and eerie feeling. Some say that the feeling they get walking around these rocks is like walking around the stone circles in England, there is a sense of the underlying force of nature but also a deep peace that comes from the place. Either way it is a special place and well worth a visit, and make sure you see all the rocks not just the first few at the entrance. We named a few, the snail and Elephant, The four maidens and the dog and the moon. I hope you enjoy the place and get to see some of what we mean cheers Al
