Gary W. Jay, MD, DAAPM, FAAPM, Medical Consultant, Raleigh-Durahm, NC, explains the difference between somatic and visceral pain. Dr. Jay says the main difference between somatic and visceral pain has to do with the way the brain works. Somatic pain has different attributes than visceral pain. If a patient has somatic pain, the pain will travel. He gives the example of a patient being pricked with a pin on the arm and the pain traveling to the brain. Dr. Jay says that the brain can tell you within a millimeter exactly where the pain is coming from. Visceral pain is entirely different. He gives an example of abdominal pain. The abdomen contains organs that have large membranes around them. The spinal cord is not able to differentiate certain points in an organ capsule -- it just recognizes that there's something there that hurts.
