Trinity League Santa Margarita traveled to Mater Dei to take on the Monarchs. The Eagles have never beaten Mater Dei on their home floor but were looking to change that Wednesday night. The CIF Southern Section computer rankings have the Eagles at #4 in the Southern Section as the Senior led squad looked to get the monkey off their back. Mater Dei would come out hot behind Richie Ramirez who scored 7 in the first quarter. Zain Majeed also knocked down two shots from beyond the arc. Drew Anderson and Brayden Kyman paced the Eagles combining for 14 in the early going as Mater Dei led 25-21 after 1 complete. Santa Margarita would ride Kyman's hot hand as he connected on 5 threes in the first half for 15 points. Ramirez with 15 first half points of his own helped keep the Monarchs in front 44-43 at the half. Majeed would go on a heater to start the 2nd half scoring 11 of the Monarchs 13 points as they built up a 57-47 lead. By the end of the quarter Mater Dei extended the lead to 13 points 66-53. Santa Margarita continued to struggle on the offensive end and found themselves down 15 points 70-55 with 5:24 remaining in the game. That's when the Eagles flipped the switch. Santa Margarita came up with 2 big steals that turned into points. Kyman and Rodney Westmoreland both hit huge threes. The Eagles clawed their way back on a 15-0 run capped off by Kaiden Bailey dishing to Markee White who scored at the rim to make it a new ball game at 70-70 with 1:54 remaining. Trey Price would give the Monarchs the lead nailing a wide open three while Bailey would cut the lead back to only 1 point 73-72 after getting to the basket for the score. With possession of the ball, 28 seconds remaining and 18 seconds left on the shot clock Mater Dei didn't even get a shot attempt. Ramirez's pass to Barnett was stolen by Kaiden Bailey who took it coast to coast for the go ahead score. Two desperate shot attempts by Luke Barnett were off the mark as the Eagles made history winning their first-ever road game on Mater Dei's home floor 74-73 in a Trinity League thriller. Drew Anderson led all scorers with 22 points and 6 rebounds while Zain Majeed had 22 points and 6 rebounds for Mater Dei.
