Auto parts stores make money by selling parts, but how accurate are their recommendations from the "free" scan they conduct? As vehicles become more complicated, the DIYer who does not have a way to access the many modules in today's modern vehicles, the only options are to pay someone to interrogate the vehicle with a scan tool or have an auto parts store run a scan that is directed toward selling parts, hence the reason it is "free". Recently scan tool manufacturers have been producing dongles which have the same diagnostic capability with bi-directional controls as the much more expensive tablets. Since they are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the price of tablets, it gives the DIYer the ability to do much of the work required to maintain the vehicles of today, or at least have a good idea what is wrong with the vehicle reducing the chance of being taken advantage of by those with unscrupulous business practices. I have had the opportunity to evaluate four dongles and found them to be very similar in capability and function. All but one of them have yearly subscriptions to keep them operational. They will not work if you do not pay the yearly subscription, unlike the tablets that will still function, you just will not be able to update it with the latest software. They become frozen in time at the last update. With several options it comes down to what you can afford, if you can only afford $60, then you can still have full diagnostic capability with bi-directional controls as a shop with a tablet that costs a couple thousand dollars for the cheaper ones. That levels the playing field for the DIYer to say the least. Keep in mind if you go with a cheaper option to get started you will have a yearly subscription fee between $50 and $100. The only dongle without a yearly subscription fee is the one from XTool. It comes with lifetime updates. In my humble opinion, that is your cheapest option in the long run, but if you can't afford $159 up front, you still have options. On Amazon as of today it is priced at $179 with a $20 coupon. Correction, in the video I said the AFM system takes oil away from the lifter, which is not the case, the system actually supplies oil to the lifter in order to make it collapse. Also, the system turns off the coil and injector for the AFM cylinders. I am not sponsored by any of the manufacturers of scan tools and all of the tools I review are bought with my own money. I only recommend tools that I use myself. I am an Amazon affiliate and I do receive a very small commission if you use the link to make a purchase at no extra cost to you, which is appreciated beyond description. https://amzn.to/3DVY9cc
