I hiked south from Crawford Notch to Galehead Hut. The huts are run by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). For about $140 a night, they offer a bunk, dinner, breakfast and toilets. Using the huts allowed me not to have to carry cooking gear, air mattress and a tent. Nevertheless, my pack still felt heavy with a change of clothes, puffy jacket, rain gear, lunch supplies and water. The hike up fron Crawford Notch was steep, but the treadway was good. After about 3 miles of climbing, I reached a swampy area along the Pemigewasset River. Soon, I was making good time along an old railroad grade. I had lunch at the Zealand Falls AMC Hut and had about 7 miles to go. The trail became a jumble of rock and short climbs. I did the 7 miles in 5 hours 45 minutes and arrived at the Hut to meet Flatlander and Chips who had hiked NOBO to the Hut. Dinner consisted of pulled pork, rice, salad and many glasses of lemonade. As the evening waned, I tried to remember my 4th grade French with a lady from Quebec. Soon, I was exhausted and climbed into my second story bunk. The climb required a challenging climbing move, but the deep sleep was worth it.
