How to Turn a Certified Instructor Into a Full-Time Partner

Solomon Brenner has opened 30+ martial arts schools with partners. Some were incredible successes. Some were disasters that nearly destroyed locations. Here's what he learned about turning your best instructor into a full-time partner without it blowing up in your face. First: your school has to be a prototype worth joining. If your school barely squeaks by, no A-player is going to sign up for that. They have to look at your life and think 'I want that.' Second: the hard truth. Right now, if someone says 'karate instructor,' most people hear 'bum.' Nobody's bragging about it. If you want great people, you need an opportunity that's clearly better than what they already have. Third: character over competence. Every single time. Solomon got talked into partnering with people he had doubts about. 'One bad apple ruined our school for years.' His test now? 'If I would let them hang out at my house when I'm not there, we're probably good.' Fourth: get the spouse on board. Have dinner with them. Tell them ALL the bad stuff upfront. Home at 10pm every night. Saturdays are birthday parties. First few years, you're investing money and getting nothing back. If the spouse isn't truly on board, the partnership will fall apart. Fifth: pre-frame the first three years honestly. Zero free time. Overworked and underpaid. The seesaw flips eventually, but they need to know what they're walking into.
