1. Water Collection at the Dam • A dam is built across a river to store a large amount of water in a reservoir. • The stored water has potential energy due to its height. ⸻ ⬇️ 2. Water Flows to the Turbines • When electricity is needed, gates open, and water flows through penstocks (large pipes) from the reservoir. • The flowing water gains speed and hits the turbines. ⸻ ⚙️ 3. Turbines Convert Water Energy to Mechanical Energy • The force of the moving water spins the turbine blades. • This converts potential energy → kinetic energy → mechanical energy. ⸻ ⚡ 4. Generator Converts Mechanical Energy to Electrical Energy • The turbines are connected to generators. • As turbines spin, generators produce electricity (usually 11–33 kV). ⸻ 🔼 5. Step-Up Transformers Increase Voltage • Electricity goes to a step-up transformer which increases the voltage (e.g., from 11 kV to 132 kV or higher). • This is needed for long-distance transmission with less energy loss. ⸻ 🛣️ 6. Power Travels Through Transmission Lines • High-voltage electricity is transmitted through transmission towers over long distances to cities, towns, and villages. ⸻ 🔽 7.
