RARE! DC Rail 56301 + 56103 AT MEREHEAD! + AMERICAN SHUNTERS working at MEREHEAD & WHATLEY QUARRIES!

While steam reigned supreme in the Quantocks with the West somerset Steam Gala in full swing,    • WEST SOMERSET STEAM GALA | FRIDAY TRAINS a...   over in the Mendips, another significant railway rarity came in the form of x2 DC Rail Class 56 diesels working the 6Z60, arriving today on an inbound and outbound working between Willesden DC Rail Sidings! The grids were deputising for 60055, which failed a test run & returned to Colwick from Willesden on Thursday morning. After leaving the WSR, we take a trip to Somerset’s two Mendip Rail served limestone quarries today, Aggregate Industries Merehead Quarry/ Torr Works and Hansons Whatley Quarry, and during the two hours these rare beasts were at Merehead, there was plenty going on at both Quarries! We see 56301 and 56103 arriving into Merehead, bringing the rake of empty wagons in to the arrival sidings at the quarry where the they would be loaded for the return later on. American built SW1001EMD 44 ‘Western Yeoman II’ made a welcome appearance, both shunting around the sidings and relieving the grid duo of their wagons, before coupling up and taking them into the Quarry to be loaded. We also pay a couple of visits to Whatley Quarry, which had a number of Class 59s and Class 66s on shed, as well as the other large resident American built General Motors Electro-Motive Division SW1001 Switcher Hanson 120 'Kenneth John Witcombe' which was shunting around. The final scenes show 56301 and 56103 heading down to Whites Crossing, ready to take the 6M18 Merehead Quarry - Willesden DC Rail Sidings.
