Is it Snot or Spinal Fluid? Doctor Explains. Sources- chiarikate on TT PMID 39542549 It’s important to distinguish ordinary nasal discharge from a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak because, although runny noses are extremely common and usually harmless, a CSF leak can indicate a defect in the skull or meninges that needs medical attention. Standard nasal discharge from allergies or infection is usually thicker, can be cloudy or coloured, and often comes with congestion, sneezing, or other cold-like symptoms. In contrast, CSF leakage typically produces a thin, clear, watery fluid that may drip continuously, especially when straining, leaning forward or bending over. There are also other clues that point toward a CSF leak. People may experience a salty or metallic taste at the back of the throat, headaches, light sensitivity or dizziness. Sometimes, the area around the eye or nose may feel unusually full or pressure-heavy. Because a CSF leak increases the risk of meningitis if left untreated, recognising these warning signs is crucial. Anyone with persistent, unexplained clear nasal drainage—especially after head trauma, sinus surgery, or anything that could affect the skull—should seek medical assessment to ensure the right diagnosis and treatment. #sinuses #nose #flu
