Basic contralateral movements for coordination. One skill that is crucial to developing and maintaining coordination is combining contralateral movements together. Many movements of daily living such as walking or running fall under this category. While this may seem simple, it is shocking the number of adults that have lost the ability to crawl properly, many even have difficulty with basic marching patterns. Contralateral movements are a key part of the neurodevelopmental sequence of all humans, however the ability to move in these ways is often lost if not practiced regularly. Crawling particularly seems to degrade over time with disuse. This can be problematic and seems to be correlated with a decrease in core stability and hip/shoulder mobility. In this video below, you will see some easy drills you can use to begin to improve contralateral patterning. These drills are easy and fun and can be practiced daily or as part of a dynamic warm up before exercise. 1. Lazy 8’s with eye motion 2. Marching pattern opposite hand to opposite knee 3. Opposite hand to opposite instep 4. Opposite hand to opposite instep (behind the body) 5. Opposite hand to opposite shoulder, opposite hand to opposite knee 6.
