Please share with your friends. Bangor is the city where Anita and I studied at university, and this is our first visit since we left 45 year ago! Bangor is a small but lively city in North Wales, located on the Menai Strait and nestled between the Snowdonia mountains and the Isle of Anglesey. It's known for its rich history, stunning scenery, and as a hub for education and culture. History and Key Landmarks Ancient Roots: The city's history is deeply intertwined with its cathedral. Bangor is home to one of the oldest cathedral foundations in Britain, with a religious site dating back to the 6th century, founded by St. Deiniol. Bangor Cathedral: The present-day cathedral largely dates from the 12th century and has undergone several restorations. It remains a key landmark and a peaceful place to visit, known for its historic tombs and stained glass. Industrial Growth: Bangor's growth as a major town was propelled by the Welsh slate industry in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Slate from nearby quarries was shipped all over the world from Port Penrhyn, contributing to the city's prosperity. Garth Pier: This elegant Victorian pier, stretching nearly 1,500 feet into the Menai Strait, is one of the longest and best-preserved piers in Wales. It's a popular spot for a stroll, offering fantastic views of Anglesey and the Snowdonia mountains. Penrhyn Castle: Just a short distance from the city, this magnificent 19th-century neo-Norman castle is a must-see. Built on the profits of the slate industry and sugar plantations, it's now managed by the National Trust and features an impressive art collection, opulent rooms, and expansive parkland. Bangor University Bangor is a prominent university town, and Bangor University plays a central role in its life. Foundation: Established in 1884 as the University College of North Wales, the university was funded by local quarrymen and farmers who wanted to provide higher education for the people of North Wales. "The College on the Hill": The Main Arts Building, with its striking architecture, is a recognizable feature of the city. Perched on a hill, it's affectionately known by its Welsh nickname, Y Coleg ar y Bryn. Academic Excellence: The university is highly regarded for its teaching quality and research, particularly in fields like marine and environmental sciences. It offers a wide range of courses across the arts, humanities, and sciences. Student Life: With a student population of around 10,000, Bangor has a close-knit and friendly community. The university provides various support services and a wide range of clubs and societies. Things to Do Outdoor Activities: Located between the Snowdonia National Park and the coast, Bangor is an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking, mountain biking, or climbing, and even try the world's fastest zipline at nearby Zip World. Cultural Experiences: Visit Storiel, Bangor's museum and art gallery, to learn about local history and see contemporary art. The Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre, a part of the university, is a hub for theatre, film, and live performances. Scenic Walks: Take a walk up Bangor Mountain for panoramic views of the city and the Menai Strait. You can also explore the Treborth Botanic Garden, part of the university, with its native woodlands and hothouses. Explore the Surroundings: The city is conveniently located for day trips. You can easily cross the iconic Menai Suspension Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey or head into Snowdonia to explore its dramatic landscapes, including the highest peak in Wales, Mount Snowdon.
