Driving Around Downtown Cleveland, Ohio in 4k Video

Filmed on Wednesday, October 23 2024, I drive around downtown Cleveland, OH to see what's going on. Cleveland is named for Revolutionary War veteran General Moses Cleaveland. Cleaveland oversaw the plan for the design of the town before returning to Connecticut, never visiting Ohio again. Cleaveland's original surveyors shortened the name to Cleveland, however a common myth emerged that the spelling was altered by The Cleveland Advertiser in order to fit the name on the newspaper's masthead. Cleveland grew rapidly after completion of the 1832 Ohio and Erie Canal, connecting Cleveland to the Atlantic Ocean. Cleveland was a major stop on the underground railroad for escaped slaves en route to Canada. In 1870, John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in Cleveland but moved it's headquarters to New York City in 1885. By 1910, Cleveland was known as "Sixth City" due to being the 6th largest population in the United States. Several automotive companies were located in Cleveland during this time creating gasoline-fueled vehicles, steam-powered cars, and electric cars. During the roaring twenties the city's Playhouse Square was established along with the notorious Short Vincent street. Short Vincent became a gathering place for gamblers, racketeers, lawyers, newspapermen, celebrities, and sports figures. The north side of the street was considered the "respectable" side while the south side of the street was a hub for the numbers racket and was studded with "girlie shows". The pavement between the two sides of the street was known as the "Gaza Strip". Prohibition first took effect in Ohio in 1919, however it was not well-enforced in Cleveland. The ban on alcohol led to the rise of speakeasies and organized crime gangs throughout the city. Alcohol was smuggled from Canada across Lake Erie by gangs such as the Mayfield Road Mob. The "flapper" era marked the beginning of downtown Cleveland's golden age of retail. Cleveland had one of the largest and most fashionable shopping districts in America, rivaling New York's Fifth Avenue. In the late 40s and early 50s, the city became known as "The City of Champions" after the Cleveland Indians won the 1948 World Series, the Cleveland Barons hockey team became champions of the American Hockey League, and the Cleveland Browns dominated professional football. Cleveland's Cuyahoga Rover became a catalyst for the American environmentalist movement after catching fire several times. One of the most polluted rivers in America, the river was described as one that "oozes rather than flows" and one in which a person "does not drown, but decays". In the 1970s, Cleveland became known as "Bomb City USA" due to several bombings between organized crime gangs. Due the loss of manufacturing and steel jobs, Cleveland's unemployment rate peaked in 1983 at 13.8%. Ohio produced the 5th most beer in the US, with its largest brewery being Cleveland's Great Lakes Brewing Company. Dozens of breweries exist within the city limits. #drivingtour #cleveland #ohio
