Permethrin | Permethrin Lotion for Scabies & Lice | Permethrin Cream for Scabies & Lice, Side Effect Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid used as an insecticide, acaricide, and insect repellent, commonly known by brand names such as Nix Cream Rinse, Elimite, and Acticin. Medically, it treats scabies and head lice. For scabies, adults and children over 2 months apply a 5% cream from the neck down and leave it on for 8-14 hours. For lice, a 1% lotion or cream rinse is applied to towel-dried hair for 10 minutes. Common side effects include mild burning, stinging, itching, redness, swelling, and rash. Permethrin works by affecting the voltage-gated sodium channels in the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. It is less toxic to humans due to its specificity to invertebrates. Caution is advised during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in individuals with severe skin conditions or allergies to pyrethroids.
