How to clean most any seeds in large amounts, using a couple of plastic tubs, a fan, and some screen. Transcript: Picking and cleaning seeds by hand can be very time-consuming. Do you have a healthy amount of garden seeds that you would like to harvest? I would like to share my techniques on how to clean seeds the easy way on this episode of gardening for the win. How to clean seeds. Summer is over here in the northern hemisphere and there's only one last thing to do before winter comes: harvest and clean seeds for next year. The easiest way for me to get this done is just to clip the stems and gather everything into plastic tubs. Once you have your seeds in the tubs, the next step is to break everything apart and to get the seeds off of the stems and out of the seed pods. You can do this part by hand or if you have a whole tub full of seeds, I like to use a sledgehammer or a baseball bat to give everything a good mashing. Once everything is mashed up, the next step is an old technique called winnowing; so for this you will want to set up a fan and pour your mashed up seeds and stems from one tub, down through the air current, into another tub below. The heavy seeds and stems will fall down into the tub below, while the lighter materials are blown off to the side. After repeating this a few times, you will be left with seeds and heavy stems. Now to separate the stems you will need some type of screen. To clean these cabbage seeds, I'm using a larger type of screen called hardware cloth, available at most hardware stores. After a couple of rounds through the hardware cloth, most of the unwanted debris will be removed. One easy way to separate the remaining debris is to shake the tub and the seeds will automatically separate from the debris where it's easy enough to remove it by hand. This technique works with almost any type of seed: carrot seed, corn, beet seed - you name it. This one quarter-inch hardware cloth has cleaned my seeds well enough for my needs. If you would like to clean your seeds to a finer degree, you can find one eighth inch hardware cloth online for a reasonable price.
