House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii : Beware of the Dog mosaic

The ancient Roman town of Pompeii lay buried under ash for around 1700 years following the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in AD.79. Excavations of the lost city began in the 1700's and the House of the Tragic Poet is one of a number of houses open to the public. The House of the tragic poet is famous for its 'Beware of the dog' mosaic at the original entrance to the house. Visitors are not permitted to walk over the mosaic and have to enter through a side door. It's worth mentioning that if the gates to a villa/house are locked (which they will be) Don't just walk on, instead peer through the gates and you might see a beautiful fresco, mosaic or fountain.
