The Sawtooth Mountains of central Idaho vividly showcase two different granites from two different geologic periods. Head out to these rugged and scenic mountains with geology professor Shawn Willsey as he examines the contact between the ~90 million year old (Cretaceous) gray granodiorite of the Idaho batholith which has been intruded by ~50 million year old (Eocene) pink granite of the Sawtooth pluton, the intrusive equivalent of the Challis volcanics. The area between Alpine Lake and Sawtooth Lake is a great location to observe the textures and interplay between these two ancient magma bodies.
