In this video, Dr. Mallikarjun Kalashetty, Head of the Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy at Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, explains bone marrow transplantation, an advanced medical procedure used for patients with cancers, bone marrow failure syndromes, and inherited conditions such as thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, primary immunodeficiencies, and storage disorders. There are two main types: autologous and allogeneic transplantation. Autologous transplantation involves collecting a patient’s own stem cells, typically used in multiple myeloma or refractory lymphoma. Patients first undergo treatment to reduce disease burden, after which stem cells are harvested and high-dose chemotherapy is given before reinfusing the cells. Allogeneic transplantation, on the other hand, uses stem cells from healthy donors. These may come from matched siblings, unrelated donor registries, or partially matched family members in what is known as haploidentical transplantation. Allogeneic transplantation is considered for conditions such as acute leukaemias, aplastic anaemia, thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, and other inherited marrow or immune disorders. Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, has one of the best transplant programmes in Karnataka, offering transplants for both children and adults with malignant, benign, and rare inherited diseases.
