A talk and book signing with legendary public intellectual from the Global South, author and long-time IPS ally Walden Bello, the first in a monthly IPS series on: Lessons from Resistance to Authoritarianism Around the World. The absorbing memoir, Global Battlefields: Memoir of a Legendary Public Intellectual from the Global South by a legendary public intellectual from the Global South vividly recounts his journey from student activist to a global figure on the international left. Here IPS was in a conversation with the author and long-time ally Walden Bello for lessons from his half century of fighting the Marcos dictatorship, building the global justice movement, building a left party in the Philippines, serving in the Philippine Congress, and building effective international movements for peace, justice, and the environment. Bello's creative experiences as an activist scholar in the Philippines, the United States, and in other parts of the world offer great insights into the challenges of progressives everywhere. Long-time IPSer John Cavanagh starts it off by interviewing Bello about his life and his book, and what they can teach us today. Co-sponsoring organizations: Public Citizen, the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), and CODEPINK. This session with Walden Bello was the first in a monthly IPS series on: Lessons from Resistance to Authoritarianism Around the World
