Bangkok, November 1964; at Lumpini Stadium, it is said that Muay Thai champion Nongmai Sitthichai — who had become the undisputed legend of Thailand's fighting world with a seventy-fight winning streak — picked an ordinary-looking young man from the crowd during a special exhibition organized by promoter Somsak. As the crowd laughed, an old man in the left corner of the stands, someone who had seen this young man years before in Hong Kong, is said to have whispered to the person next to him, "Don't bet against that kid." The small-framed, narrow-shouldered young man who stepped into the ring is said to have been none other than Bruce Lee. It is also part of the legend that Nongmai was born in a poor village north of Chiang Mai, and that his Muay Thai journey — which began at the age of eight under Kru Wichai — had carried him to this point over thirty-four years. According to legend, inside the ring, every technique and every combination Nongmai threw came to nothing; rather than using force, Bruce Lee redirected his opponent's power and neutralized it. For ninety seconds, Nongmai could not land a single clean strike, while Bruce made his presence felt with nothing more than light touches. It is told that three thousand spectators fell into a deep silence, and that Nongmai felt — for the first time in his thirty-four-year career — that his mental fuel had run out inside the ring. The most striking moment of this legend is recounted as follows: Nongmai performed the wai kru salute — one he had only ever given to his master Kru Wichai — for Bruce Lee, and the entire stadium fell into a silence of reverence. It is said that Bruce left Bangkok with nothing but his notes, having said, "I don't teach style, I teach understanding," and that after that night, Nongmai transformed into a fighter who watched his opponents not to defeat them, but to understand them. The legend that only a handful of those three thousand people truly saw what happened at Lumpini that night is still being told today. #brucelee #muaythai #martialarts #legendary #martialartshistory This video is an original fictional story inspired by Bruce Lee.
