TN-08-Science https://inpeth.com/course/RktxnFRMnt4... Water is very essential for crops. Crops should be irrigated in regular intervals for better yield. In this video, we will learn about different irrigation methods. Most difficult part of irrigation is to take water from water sources to crop fields. There are traditional as well as modern methods which solve this problem. Traditionally water from water sources are taken out with the help of animals. Methods such as Moat, Chain Pump, and Rahat are few examples. In moat, bulls were used for pulling water in big containers from pond, well, and lakes. Chain pump consists of chain of containers which are connected through chained setup. In rahat, bulls were used to operate the setup. These methods take a lot of labour and time, but there are modern methods which not only save time, but reduces water wastage. Let's discuss them in detail. Basin irrigation: In this method, crop field is filled with water. Paddy fields are irrigated in this way. Furrow Irrigation: In this method, water is allowed to enter the field through channels of furrows, made between two rows of crop. Crops of sugarcane, banana, vegetables etc. are irrigated in such fashion. In basin and furrow methods, soil without plants also gets irrigated which is not required. Uses of sprinkler and drip system further minimises the water wastage. Sprinkler irrigation: sprinkler systems are used in the fields where roots are not deep enough and require only surface water, . It is also suitable for places where soil can not retain water for long time. For example, during summer, it is better to use sprinkler system as evaporation is maximum due to heat. You must have seen these systems in lawn, wheat fields etc. . Drip irrigation: In this method, water falls drop by drop directly at the position of the roots. It is most efficient method of irrigation. This method is a boon for places which have poor water availability. It helps in irrigating Grapes, Banana, Brinjal, fields.
