Bariatric vs. Metabolic Surgery

As patients research surgery for obesity they come to know of it as “weight loss surgery” or “bariatric surgery.” And while there is no doubt that successful patients will lose a significant amount of weight after their surgical procedure, that is not the primary purpose of surgery. Rather, bariatric procedures are meant to, first and foremost, improve or resolve many of the diseases associated with obesity and morbid obesity. As such, the term “metabolic surgery” may actually be more appropriate than either weight loss or bariatric. Why?
