As patients research surgery for obesity they come to know of it as “weight loss surgery” or “bariatric surgery.” And while there is no doubt that successful patients will lose a significant amount of weight after their surgical procedure, that is not the primary purpose of surgery. Rather, bariatric procedures are meant to, first and foremost, improve or resolve many of the diseases associated with obesity and morbid obesity. As such, the term “metabolic surgery” may actually be more appropriate than either weight loss or bariatric. Why? Metabolic processes affect virtually every part of the body, and one of the biggest impediments to proper metabolic function is excess weight or obesity. As such, when we lose weight and improve the diseases associated with obesity through surgery, we are actually improving our health holistically. Virtually every part of the body improves in some way. From sleep, to blood sugar, to bone and joint health and even hormonal balance, the improvement after a successful metabolic procedure is stunning. Eventually, the goal is to use these procedures to treat patients with metabolic disorders regardless of their weight. Especially for those patients, metabolic surgery would be a more apt description than weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery. In the meantime, patients who are suffering from obesity with a BMI of 35 or over with one or more comorbidities or diseases associated with obesity, or those with a BMI or 40 or over regardless of their comorbidities, may qualify for surgery and should investigate their options further, especially if any of their are poorly- or un-controlled.
