Mental health can affect anyone. It doesn’t discriminate. Thankfully it’s more accepted now to ask for help, to talk about our struggles and seek support. Sadly that hasn’t always been the case. Tragically after a 3 year battle with depression, Cody Singer, a talented horseman and successful jumps jockey took his own life on 29 August 2017. Starting his apprenticeship at the tender age of 14 with Richard and Judy Collett, who became like second family, Cody rode for 10 seasons where he saluted the judge 36 times. Each year, his family sponsor an annual race on Manawatu Steeplechase and Hurdles day. We caught up with Cody’s family and friends, at the time of this race, to talk about his mental health journey following a number of serious falls, and the effects of mental health in our industry. If you or someone you know is struggling, head to loveracing.nz/participant-welfare for contact details of those who can help. You are not alone. Disclaimer: Unfortunately, two days prior to Cody’s race and filming, NZ went into L2/L3 lockdown and his family and ourselves were not allowed on-course for the filming of his Memorial race which was taken out by Country Bumpkin.
