Stuck in Barbuda: Surviving Paradise or Succumbing to Hell?
As promised, we are now going to Barbuda, the "little sister" of Antigua. World famous kite surfing spot, infinite white sand beaches, like on postcards, almost deserted island accessible only by boat. Barbuda is often described as a paradise on earth among boaters. However, we are very far from Antigua here... The sad reality is that she is rather the one left behind in the story! In the south, land has been sold to unscrupulous developers who have built luxury hotels for a few wealthy people or honeymooners. One of the resorts is located in a natural and protected area (they even destroyed sand dunes to build an airfield). For the other, an ecosystem in the mangrove was ravaged to build a golf course ! Robert de Niro has one of his Nobu restaurants nearby. Some guests arrive here by helicopter, from St Barth or Antigua... Beyond this ecological aberration, the village of Codrington is completely abandoned, fed by crows if one can say. Most of the inhabitants stayed in Antigua after the passage of Irma so the houses are almost all in ruins. There is no garbage system anymore and the roadsides are littered with plastic wrappers where deer, donkeys, horses, chickens and wild dogs survive.
