Soooo, a standoff. A comparison. The replica versus the clone. Last month I completed building the DinSync RE-808: a really cool replica of the drumcomputer of all drumcomputers. It sounds awesome and I wondered how it sounded compared to my Behringer RD-8. And since the internet loves that kinda stuff I though why not make a video out of it. Please note that I build this RE-808 myself as my first DIY project. As it is a replica, like any other RE-808 (or actual TR-808) it can sound different from other machines due to calibration and component tolerances. Here is what I did: The Sequentix Cirklon functions as a (large) midi and dinsync clock. The Allen & Heath Xone:92 as a (very large) crossfader. The Xone goes into ableton for recording without any processing. What you hear is the raw recording, normalized to crank the volume a bit. When LEFT channel is up: Behringer RD-8 MK1 When RIGHT channel is up: DinSync RE-808 Take into account that the volume and tone pots differ between the two units so its difficult to make a good comparison without going into detailed volume matching everytime. I did't want to do that and tried to do it as good as possible while going trough some famous 808 patterns. That said, I think: The RE-808 is a little brighter and has some more bite in in, while the RD-8 sounds a bit cleaner and the longer bd decay makes me want to mod my re-808 to also have it. Some RD-8 sounds are obviously tuned lower, which sometimes sound bettter and sometimes not. I would say you can't go wrong with any of the two. The RD-8 is a nice modern tool, with the sounds of an 808 and won't let you down. The DinSync RE-808 is beautiful to look at and sounds great AND of course makes you feel like you have the real deal. And if you're in diy, it is a real pleasure to create this machine from the 80s. I'll leave it up to you if one is better than the other, I'm sure you will let me know ;) #808 #comparison #dinsync #behringer #80s #drumcomputer #808standoff
