Diving the famous Palancar Reef in Cozumel, Mexico

Palancar Reef is a very nice dive site, if not the best around Cozumel, of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which stretches nearly 700 miles from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down through the Honduran Bay Islands. Since Jacques Cousteau discovered the reef in 1961 there has been a continuous rise in Divers visiting. The roughly 6 kilometers long Palancar reef is actually a blend of several different coral formations, with dive depths ranging from 5 meters to 35 meters. The waters of the Palancar Reef are crystal clear, with visibility up to 60 meters, perfect for scuba divers to mingle with sea turtles, eagle rays, and shimmering schools of tropical fish. There are different parts of the reef: Palancar Gardens at the north end of the reef is shallow and features great caverns. Another novice level dive, the labyrinth like Little Caves area is home to amazing passageways, canyons and tunnels. As you explore, you’ll be surrounded by dazzlingly colorful coral.
