LOCALS ONLY! Special pattern rules for the locals at Brookhaven Airfield, KHWV

Apparently, the locals at Brookhaven have a different definition of a “Downwind 45”, or maybe, this guy just wanted to jump ahead and get his pancake breakfast. Unfortunately, I forgot my audio jack, so didn’t capture the radio traffic where he repeatedly told me he was joining the “downwind 45” and then suddenly appeared in front of me on an extended base. Stuff happens, I guess… The flight originated at KISP (Long Island MacArthur Airport or “Islip” – CLASS C) on 5/21/16 and was a quick VFR direct to KHWV (Brookhaven Airfield - uncontrolled) so I could get some pattern work done. I was living overseas at the time but often had business in NYC. I used these opportunities to stay current. Since I had learned to fly in TN, the Class B environment of NYC was a little intimidating to say the least. I was looking for a place that I could just concentrate on stick and rudder. It was early in the morning and the weather was great. Other than this incident, it was a great flying day and I had some super landings.
