Zoviet France was for years one of the most radical groups of the 1980s, an ideal bridge between the industrial music of the early days and the free noise of the 1990s. Unlike almost all the "industrial" bands of their generation, Zoviet France were also a model of consistency, continuing to offer terrible and austere music instead of falling back on the banalities of dance music or "apocalyptic folk." Ben Ponten and Robin Storey formed Zoviet France when the "fashion" of Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire was already dying out. Their collective embraced the "do it yourself" aesthetic of punk in the context of electronic music influenced by Terry Riley's minimalism, Lee Perry's dub productions, and ethnic musics. Their compositions are largely based on cyclic drone emanating from loops and ethnic instruments, a simple technique that produces a hypnotic and evocative flow of sound. Each album contains a defining element (typically a sampling) that recurs from beginning to end. They came to be lumped in with "industrial music" for lack of any other label. Formed in Newcastle, they began playing five years after Throbbing Gristle. While demonstrating the same flaws as the school (notably inexhaustible prolixity and stubborn repetition of a few ideas), Zoviet France established themselves as one of the more orthodox and less puerile groups. But most of their records are monotonous, and terribly similar to each other (the main attraction of the records are actually the covers, those yes original and imaginative). But maturity technique consists instead of a haunting electronic minimalism that aims for trance (as in Indian and ambient music) rather than shock. The electronica is not the lush electronica of German cosmic music or the fiercely expressionistic electronica of Throbbing Gristle, but a "poor," crafted, "lo-tech" variant of the latter.Their "lo-fi" interpretation of the techniques of the Dadaist avant-garde and musique concrete is best defined on the double albums Mohnomishe (1983) and Eostre (1984), which are as monumental as they are banal, eviscerating without much acumen but with much determination the electroacoustic properties of the sound.
