February 2007 -- U.S. Government officials confirm that if the United States found itself under a major cyber attack, it is prepared to launch a counter attack. April 2007 -- Former Soviet Republic of Estonia is taken offline with a sustained DDoS attack, effectively isolating the country from the rest of the Internet. January 2008 -- First high profile DDoS attack launched by hacker group "Anonymous" against scientology.org. 2010 -- DDoS goes mainstream, breaking the 100 Gbps barrier for the first time -- 1000% increase in attack size over 5 years December 2010 -- PayPal falls victim to DDoS attacks, along with a number of other major financial sites and credit card companies June 2011 -- CIA Director Leon Panetta tells the Senate Armed Services Committee "The next Pearl Harbor that we confront could very well be a cyber attack that cripples America's electrical grid and its security and financial systems." April 2012 -- Hacker group "Anonymous" targets a number of government sites, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the CIA, and the UK Home Office. September 2012 -- "Hacktivists" issue statements vowing to target several major U.S. financial services firms on specific dates.
