Located in Shropshire, England, the Ironbridge Gorge is a deep gorge containing River Severn. Abraham Darby (1677–1717) arrived there in 1708 and set up a blast furnace to produce iron. He developed a method of producing pig iron in a blast furnace fuelled by coke rather than charcoal. This had greatly increased the efficiency in the production of iron and reduced production costs. His invention had fuelled the Industrial Revolution as iron was an important raw material for making engines, bridges, railways and all kinds of machinery necessary for large scale industrialisation, paving the way for the ensuing Industrial Revolution. To showcase the great potential of iron, his grandson Abraham Darby III (1750–1789) built in 1779 the first cast-iron bridge in the world, as a crossing over River Severn near Coalbrookdale. The bridge made it possible for the village of Ironbridge to grow up around it, with the area being subsequently named Ironbridge Gorge. The Coalbrookdale Company also invested heavily on blast furnaces, mines, pit mounds, spoil heaps, foundries, factories, workshops, warehouses, housing for workers, public buildings, infrastructure and transport systems in the area. It also pioneered in a number of projects involving the innovative use of steam power. In 1968, an independent educational charity called the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust was established to preserve and promote this cradle of the Industrial Revolution. The Trust manages ten museums and a number of historic sites within the area. The ten museums are the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron (including the old Blast Furnace), Darby Houses, Enginuity, Museum of the Gorge, Iron Bridge and Tollhouse, Jackfield Tile Museum, Broseley Pipeworks, Coalport China Museum, Tar Tunnel and Blists Hill Victorian Town (including the Hay Inclined Plane). Unfortunately, Darby Houses, Broseley Pipeworks and Tar Tunnel were closed at the time of my visit. In recognition of its rich heritage and historical significance, the Ironbridge Gorge has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. For visits and further information on the museums in Ironbridge Gorge, please refer to its official website at https://www.ironbridge.org.uk/.
