(口述|劉貞伶;撰稿|傅明蔚) Dawn and Dusk (Dizi and Chinese Orchestra)/Composed by Liu, Chen-Ling Dizi by Lin Chia-Yin The dawn and the dusk are the morning and evening, i.e., the sunrise and sunset. A day begins with the sunrise and ends with the sunset. Time flies in the rules of nature. The ancient said, “Looking up, I admire the sun and the moon, while chasing after time day in and day out.” “People always sign and admire the natural flow of time, while running around working hard in between.” By following the rules of nature, valuing morning and taking some time to look at the dawn and the dusk, will we and can we stop the busy steps for a while and feel the ease of being? This work for the dizi begins with a quiet ad libitum passage, symbolizing the twilight changes at dawn. After sunlight wakes the earth up at dawn, the adagio passage comes in, depicting how sunlight shines on the ground while the reeds swing being caressed by the gentle breeze, with the sound of the dizi exclaiming the sorrow and joy of all kinds. The allegro third section is light but contemplative, linking the ad liberum fourth section in a ballad style. Harmonics are used frequently to make the run more interesting. In the coda, the theme reappears to run through dawn to dusk. Although sadness arises when the sun goes down, when the dawn comes again, a new day will begin.
