A young man watches his mother die. NORTH is used with permission from Phil Sheerin. Learn more at https://vimeo.com/philsheerin. Aaron is a teenage boy living with his other on an isolated rural farm in Northern Ireland. Aaron is both restless and hard-working, but his quiet life is about to be disrupted by the impending death of his mother, who has been living with a terminal illness for some time. But as friends and family arrive, Aaron's struggle to maintain normalcy becomes more fraught. As his inner tension builds, he must assert his place in the home and say goodbye to his mother on his own terms. Directed and written by Phil Sheerin, this powerful but restrained short drama traces the journey of a young man grappling with his mother's impending death. Filmed with a naturalistic, quiet visual approach that is both observational and poetic, the narrative explores love, loss, and the complexities of familial relationships during times of grief. Aaron is essentially the "man" of the house, tending to the farm chores and caring for his mother. They have a deep and close bond, built up over the years. However, the intimacy of their existence is disrupted by the arrival of friends and family. They want to be supportive, but their efforts often feel intrusive to Aaron, and he wrangles with overbearing relatives who try to tell Aaron what to do. The varied ways they deal with impending death create a rising tension in Aaron's external world, and inwardly, he's also forced to look at what his mother's death will mean for him. Oscar-nominated actor Barry Keoghan's portrayal of Aaron has a remarkable depth and authenticity, capturing Aaron's silent turmoil with few words. He is mature for his age, but he is still a teenager, with an adolescent's volatility. But slowly, he faces the inevitable, leading to the film's poignant final section. Stark, spare and emotionally rich, "North" offers a poignant exploration of how we confront mortality, and through Aaron's journey, we experience what it means to understand death's finality -- and to find the way we best go through this rite of passage for ourselves. For Aaron, it means paring away the noise and being present with the loved one -- and helping them let go of life in a final, heart-rending and unforgettable goodbye.
