It's my one year anniversary working at Microsoft as a program manager, so I thought it might be useful to reflect on what I've learned throughout this past year! Work is different from college. In college, there are so many different things to worry about at the same time. I was a mathematics and computer science major and I had to worry about programming assignments, math tests, history essays, clubs, internships, jobs, and a ton of extra stuff. At work, you generally only have to juggle a couple of different things, that are all somewhat related to each other. It'll obviously depend on your team and company, but generally as a program manager you'll worry mostly about the planning and user requirements. Whereas as a software engineer, you'll worry about the actual software engineering of the product. Another thing I noticed from working 1 year at Microsoft as a program manager, is that imposter syndrome comes in waves. I noticed imposter syndrome started high for me and drastically tapered off. But when I changed teams, it spiked again, but the peak of this spike was lower than the initial onboarding peak. Therefore, I think the ebb and flow of imposter syndrome is similar to that of a sine/cosine graph. Another great tip when joining a new company is to research all of their benefits. So many tech companies have a lot of great benefits, so it's definitely worth it to take the time and research it! Lastly, I think its vital to consistently ask questions. Now when you are working on a software engineering task, it is important to try it yourself, but time gate it. You don't want to spend 6 hours working on a bug, when you could solve it in 5 minutes by asking another engineer. Those are just some of the highlights I've noticed so far at Microsoft, but I'm looking forward to learning a lot more.
