In the early 1970's the late Barry Cockcroft made a series of films called "Once in a Lifetime". These programmes were shown on the whole ITV network. One of the more memorable programmes was called "A Romany Summer", which featured a family of Romany Gypsies who travelled and lived on the lanes around York. The main character in the programme was Sir Montague Smith, better known as Cooker Smith. Cooker allowed the television cameras to come and film him and his family living a life that in to days society beggars belief. This film features many of the aspects of a life that has sadly changed beyond recognition. Join Cooker and his family as they show us a life on the road ad they travel from village to village scraping a living and dealing in horses. Cocker also attends the famous Appleby Horse Fair as we see a fair that has hardly changed in one hundred years. Also on this video, you can see another film produced by Barry Cockroft called "A Family Affair". This films shows the gypsies at the popular Lee Gap Fair.
