In Tango, we can go in three directions (forward, sideways, and backward). How I look at it is, if you're moving more forward than sideways, you're going forward, if you're going more sideways than forward or backward, you're going sideways, and if you're going back more than sideways, you're going backward. Another way to look at it is you are only going side if you are stepping directly to the side without any forward or backward motion. Neither way of looking at it is better than the other because it doesn't change anything about the dance, it's more for us dance nerds out there to sit and ponder/argue the difference. "Where do the side step end and the forward step begin?" (hint: at 45 and 315 degrees). In this video, we are still talking about communication. We have learned how to get the follower to extend backward and sideways. Now we will look at how to extend the follower's leg forward. We will learn in upcoming videos just how we turn that extension into movement. All lead extensions come through the connection. As the follower stands in one place, they will not move unless led to (or embellishing which we won't learn about for a long time). When we take a backstep, we do not pull our partner with our arms, we use the points where they touch us on the backside of our body and we can pull them into the step. Followers wait to feel the information through the points they are touching the leader on the back side of the leader's body. Followers resist the motion a little in order to feel which direction the leader wants the follower to go.
