Many of the more than 1.8 billion Muslims across the world have begun fasting for the holy month of Ramadan. Saudi Arabia and most other Middle Eastern states welcomed the start of Ramadan late on Friday after the crescent moon was sighted in the kingdom, which is home to Islam’s two holiest sites. “The Supreme Court has decided that tomorrow, Saturday, is the first day of the month of [Ramadan],” the official Saudi Press Agency posted on X on Friday. Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Sudan and Tunisia announced they too would begin the daytime fast on Saturday as well as in the Palestinian territory of war-torn Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Officials saw the crescent moon on Sunday night in Saudi Arabia, home to the holiest sites in Islam, marking the start of Ramadan for many of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims. Saudi Arabia has officially announced Wednesday, February 18, as the first day of Ramadan 2026. Many other countries have announced Wednesday, February 18, as the first day of Ramadan, including Qatar. During Ramadan, Muslims across the country will engage in different activities, including flocking to mosques during the evenings to perform the isha and extended Taraweeh prayers. Taraweeh are special nightly prayers that mosque goers practice exclusively during Ramadan. In addition to prayers, Muslims are encouraged to increase charitable activities to help people in need. Ramadan, one of the pillars of Islam, is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. During the month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from drinking, eating, and smoking. During the holy month, thousands, if not million Muslims, including locals in Saudi Arabia, perform Umrah, an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. Umrah can be taken at any time of the year, unlike Hajj, many prefer to take their pilgrimage during Ramadan because they believe it brings extra blessings from Allah (God). #ramadan #ramzan #mecca #taraweeh #arabnews #livenews #cnbcv18 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Makkah today, Madina today, 1 Ramadan 2026, February 2026, Kaaba live, Makkah live today, Haram Sharif live, Masjid al Haram live, Ramadan live Makkah, Mecca live stream, Kaaba 1 Ramadan, Ramadan 2026 Makkah, Madina live today, Saudi Arabia Makkah live
