Lnav (Lateral Navigation) Explained - [How Does The Airline Jets Follow The Route].

In this video, we are going to talk about the LNAV (lateral navigation). In the old days, all the planes were using ground stations, such as VORs, NDB, and so on, to find out where they were. The problem is that you cannot fly direct from point A to point B unless these two-point are ground stations or a radial/distance from a ground station. Since LNAV and the P-RNAV operations were introduced you can base your position using the GPS, the Inertial Navigation System, and the Ground Station information in order to identify your position precisely. When flying using the Lateral Navigation System you can fly direct to a point without the need for a ground station, as you can imagine this will reduce the fuel burned and the Co2 emissions. Before flying direct to a point you also need to confirm and request it to the Air Traffic Controller. In order to make sure that you comply with this type of operation, you need to monitor your Required Navigation Performance (RNP) and the Actual Navigation Performance (ANP). If your ANP is higher than the RNP you are not P-RNAV compliant and you need to fly using conventional systems such as the VORs, NDB and so, if you are under RADAR control you can ask for Radar Vectors. Once you crosschecked that the route loaded into your FMC is correct you can use LNAV and if your autopilot is engaged the plane will follow the lateral route precisely. Remember that you always need to monitor what the aircraft is doing.
