On a small road on the edge of Chongqing, there’s a sign that reads:“Picking these oranges will be fined 500 RMB. CCTV in use. Please behave.” Behind the sign is a wooden door with four characters on it: “晋人张璞” – Man from Shanxi, Zhang Pu.Inside is a compact woodworking studio: the air smells of wood, the floor is covered with sawdust, but every tool is carefully organized – even the tiniest drill bit has its own place. Zhang Pu is 34, born in Datong, Shanxi. In 2012 he came to Chongqing to study Industrial Design at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He was supposed to become an automotive designer, but failed to get his diploma and lost the job offer. That “failure” quietly pushed him onto another path – woodworking. From a rented living room with a single sander, to a 100 m² street-front workshop, to today’s quiet riverside studio, he has spent the last decade making wooden rings, objects and furniture, and slowly shaping his own way of living. At his second workshop he had a serious accident and cut two fingers. He went through surgery and recovery alone, and genuinely asked himself if he should quit this trade. In the end, he chose to come back to the studio – this is where he feels most at ease, and where he believes his life can be “stretched a little longer” through the things he makes. This film is the third episode of the “Within Reach / 一米之内” VR180 documentary series. You sit one meter across from him and listen to how a wood artisan uses a small workshop to talk about craft, space, the future, and his daughter. 📌 Best experienced in a VR headset or a VR180-compatible player.
