0:00 - Intro 1:50 - Mini puzzle 3:34 - Daily puzzle (by Freddie Cheng) 11:05 - Commentary New York Times Crossword, Saturday 1/8/22 A little harried from a long-ish day of travel and I think it shows. Also tried to set up my OBS scenes for the monitor I brought from NJ, which wasn't exactly perfectly set up... Anyway, I think the main thing that needs to work for a grid with this topology is the two triple stacks of grid-spanners really need to work. And I think Freddie accomplished that here with PASCALSTRIANGLE/INTIMATEAPPAREL/TOOTIREDTOTHINK and SETAGOODEXAMPLE/EATDESSERTFIRST/STEADYASSHEGOES. I think TOOTIREDTOTHINK is a real winner. This one had a pleasant amount of Saturday difficulty to it, with several things I didn't know. I even had a hard time initially with the triple math/stats clues for PASCALSTRIANGLE, DECILES, and FATTAIL. I also consider MUSETTE to be an almost-triple La Boheme reference along with AMIS and PARIS. Making the triple stacks work while crossing 7s in the corners is really tough. I wonder about the pluralization of TEDEUMS, and I think ELKMEAT has the slight whiff of GREENPAINT. Overall though, a nice Saturday puzzle with fun cluing, and I got a lot of help from the puzzle to fill in (and learn!) the stuff I didn't know. 40s on the Mini and 7m31s on the daily puzzle.
