Forget Welding: This Alloy Just Became My Go-To for Aluminum!

Aluminum housings and trim often have holes drilled into them because it's easier for some restorers to simply run a screw through them. While this technique may be commonplace, it is usually frowned upon by purists. This bezel had a quarter-inch hole drilled into it, so we utilized Super Alloy 5 and a brazing torch to fill the hole. Note: we used a Bernzomatic braze kit with MAPP gas and oxygen; however, this application could also be performed with a propane torch without the oxygen, but you would need a trigger start or push button torch tip (brass tips are not effective for aluminum brazing). The flux and rod grab to the heat making Super Alloy 5 is an all-position brazing rod. Aluminum does not turn red like other metals. The flux is the temperature indicator. Never add the rod until you see the flux turn transparent. If the rod balls up, discard the ball and continue to heat until the flux is clear. Always clean the aluminum before starting the soldering process. The flux will clean the contaminates unseen to the naked eye. The powder flux is what seals the holes and cracks in pressurized systems. Here's a tip for working with flux: heat up the rod first before dipping it into the powder. If the flux doesn't stick, you can try dipping the rod in water first, then in the flux.
