Developer: Inti Creates Initial Release Year: 2017 Blaster Master Zero is a reimagining of the classic Blaster Master from the NES, originally developed by Sunsoft and now revived by Inti Creates. It’s a Metroidvania-style hybrid that mixes side-scrolling platforming with top-down shooting sections. Why It’s Interesting The main feature of the game is how the player normally controls a hopper tank but can also exit the tank to control the human. In this form, you can enter dungeons where the camera shifts to a top-down view. The gameplay constantly transitions between these two modes. The original NES version already had this mechanic, but Zero expands and refines these ideas, especially in the tank segments. The controls can feel a bit clunky at first, but that’s intentional, it’s part of the challenge of handling the tank’s unique movement. You will take some hits for almost anything until get used to it. The story is also interesting in how it blends elements from both the Western and Japanese versions of the original game, creating something unique. Progression System It follows a fairly typical Metroidvania progression, with permanent upgrades that allow you to explore new areas of the map. However, the structure is relatively linear compared to other games in the genre. Duration The main story takes about 5 hours to complete, but there are multiple DLC characters. While the story remains minimal, these DLCs offer new gameplay experiences, making them a great option if you want some more. Releases There’s a physical version of the complete Blaster Master Zero trilogy, with all three games featuring voice acting. Unfortunately, this voiced version remains exclusive to the physical release for now. My Thoughts I really like how the story becomes more dramatic toward the end and develops even further in the sequels. I truly enjoyed playing it, the first game stays closest to the original NES version, while Zero 2 and Zero 3 each take the series in their own direction. They’re all excellent, but my favorite is Zero 2.
