Orgy, a band known for their unique blend of industrial, metal, electronic, and new wave sounds, rose to fame in the late 1990s with their debut album "Candyass." The journey of Orgy's frontman, Jay Gordon, is a testament to the power of music as a transformative force. Born in San Francisco, Gordon was exposed to music at a young age, performing with his godfather, Sly Stone, at just two years old. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he was shot in the leg at 13, an event that redirected him from a path of crime to one of music. Gordon's musical career began with heavy metal, but vocal cord damage forced him to switch to guitar and bass. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he became an audio engineer and worked with bands like Lit. It was here that he formed Orgy with guitarist Ryan Shuck, who had previously collaborated with Korn's Jonathan Davis. Shuck's past included a lawsuit over songwriting credits for Korn's song "Blind," which was eventually settled out of court. The band's name, Orgy, was chosen to reflect their diverse musical influences rather than any sexual connotation. Their debut album, "Candyass," was recorded in a chaotic environment in Lake Tahoe, where they threw parties that often ended in destruction. The album's success was largely due to their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday," which became a hit on MTV and alternative radio stations. Despite criticism for being a "one-hit wonder," Orgy's "Blue Monday" peaked at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Dance Music Chart. The band's fashion sense, influenced by Dead or Alive's Pete Burns, also gained them attention, with members appearing in Calvin Klein ads. However, Orgy's follow-up album, "Vapor Transmission," faced internal friction and external pressure to produce a more commercial sound. The album was certified gold but did not match the success of "Candyass." The band's story is one of both musical innovation and personal struggle, marked by themes of betrayal and reinvention.
