In this second of two videos, I survey Old Testament history from Samuel, Saul, and David to the birth of Christ. See below for an outline of what I cover in the lecture. MONARCHY (1 and 2 Samuel): Last judge, Samuel, is born 1100 to Hannah, displaces the evil sons of Eli the priest. People foolishly demand a king, so S anoints Saul; at first, he is a good king, but he is proud, erratic, and disobeys God. Samuel anoints youngest son of Jesse, the shepherd David, who defeats Philistine giant Goliath with a slingshot. Saul takes David under his wing: he befriends Jonathan, marries Michal, soothes possessed Saul with his harp. Saul tries to kill David, who hides with Philistines, but he stays loyal, sparing Saul twice. Defeated Saul kills himself; Jonathan dies in battle. David made king (1000), takes Jerusalem, unites Israel. Brings ark to Jerusalem and dances humbly before it; Michal despises him. Great king but commits adultery with Bathsheba, conspires death of her husband, Uriah. Prophet Nathan confronts David, and he repents, but sin divides his family. His son Absalom rebels; David must flee. David wants to build Temple for Lord, but he is man of blood; God builds him a house. David takes a census, causing plague. DIVIDED MONARCHY (1 Kings 1-3, 8-12, 17-19; 2 Kings 1-7, 18-25): Young 2nd son of David & Bathsheba, Solomon, has glorious reign: asks God for wisdom (not wealth), and it is granted. He builds Temple and his legendary wisdom brings Queen of Sheba, but his many wives lead him to idolatry. Kingdom divided between his son Rehoboam, who takes Jerusalem and southern kingdom of Judah (tribes of Judah and Benjamin) and rebel Jeroboam, who takes northern kingdom of Samaria (other 10 tribes). All Samarian kings are bad, especially Ahab (and wife Jezebel) who is admonished by the prophet Elijah: he raises dead, stops rain, challenges priests of Baal; he is succeeded by Elisha who does even more miracles. In end, Samaria falls to Assyria (722), 10 tribes are assimilated and become Samaritans. Judah’s fall held back by good kings Hezekiah/Josiah, but eventually she too falls to Babylon (586); Temple is destroyed, and people are taken into captivity. EXILE (Daniel 1-6; Ezra 1, 5-6; Nehemiah 1-2, 8-9; Esther): Prophets Isaiah & Jeremiah warn of coming Babylonian exile; Ezekiel preaches to exiles. Daniel is taken to Babylon to serve Nebuchadnezzar. His friends, Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego, survive fiery furnace; Daniel interprets N’s dream of giant & prophesies N’s madness/Fall of Babylon. Persians throw Daniel into lion’s den. God uses Ezra/Nehemiah to rebuild Temple. In Persia, Queen Esther convinces Xerxes (who attacked Greece in 480) to save Jews. Last prophet, Malachi, prophesies (400) that God will send Elijah to prepare way for Messiah. INTERTESTAMENTAL PERIOD (Apocrypha): Jews return but fall under power of two successor kingdoms to Alexander the Great: Ptolemies of Egypt; Seleucids of Asia. When Seleucid Antiochus Epiphanes tries to Hellenize Jews and sacrifices pig in Temple, Judas Maccabeus leads revolt (166; miracle of oil in Temple leads to Hanukah). In 63, Pompey seizes Jerusalem for Rome, defiles Temple, puts Israel under control of Herods. [Jesus born in Bethlehem 4-5 BC under Herod the Great, during Pax Romana of first Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. His ministry (27-30; preceded by John the Baptist), Crucifixion & Resurrection fall under Emperor Tiberias, Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate.]
