Various of explosion followed by heavy plumes of smoke STORYLINE: Smoke billowed over Beirut early Monday following a loud explosion, as Israel continued to pound the Lebanese capital. Israel launched a series of strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut last week and ordered all residents of the densely populated area to evacuate. The airstrikes were the latest since the last round of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began earlier in March. The Iran-backed group fired rockets and drones into Israel in retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after Israel and the U.S. began attacking Iran on Feb. 28, triggering the latest war in the Middle East. Lebanon says over a half-million people have been displaced in the week of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The actual number is likely higher. Lebanon’s count of 517,000 refers to those who registered on the government’s online portal.
