Mum Learns English To Help 11-Year-Old Daughter With Spelling

At 35. Tng Xiao Ling’s English reading ability is at the level of a 7-year-old. Yet she’s found a way to navigate life in Singapore, even working at a call centre once where she used spelling hacks to get by (eg spelling Audi as “OD”). But with her daughter in Primary 5 falling behind in school, Xiao Ling wants to overcome her illiteracy so she can help her more. She is one of five Singaporeans who volunteered for CNA’s Write of Passage project - which put them through a 12-week intervention programme with specialised one-to-one English coaching (watch the 3-part series https://cna.asia/2Zdg626 ). Among the challenges she faces is her husband questioning why she even bothers at this age; and having to perform a dramatic reading as Little Red Riding Hood in front of an audience.
